Fiona Warns of Hidden EU Health Card Charges

County MP Fiona O’Donnell is warning East Lothian holiday makers to beware of online companies charging for European Health Insurance Cards.

The card (EHIC) which you can get free through the NHS, allows you to access free hospital care if you fall ill on holiday in an EU member state.

Although the card is free, online companies are charging a processing fee to pass on holiday maker’s details to the official site.

Fiona said:

“The EHIC provides holiday makers with peace of mind that, should they fall ill on holiday in the EU, they will not be landed with massive healthcare bills.

“I have been approached by constituents who have been caught out and don’t want others to fall into the same trap.

“You can apply for an EHIC card free online, by telephone or by post.

“The government needs to step in to tighten up rules to stop these companies from ripping holiday makers off and ensure that the EHIC is properly promoted. I have written to Ian Duncan Smith, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, to ask what action he is going to take to protect travellers.”
