Fiona O’Donnell MP and Iain Gray MSP for East Lothian visited Whatton Lodge, the miner’s convalescence home in Gullane on Friday 2 July.  They met ex miners and their families who use the facility and discussed future funding opportunities with the board of Trustees.

The home has been providing holidays for ex miners and their families in the beautiful surroundings of Gullane since it was established in 1947.  It currently operates for 12 weeks a year and provides over 200 beneficiaries with a holiday each year. The board are currently exploring other funding opportunities to ensure the survival of the facility.

Fiona said: ‘I was delighted to visit Whatton Lodge and was immediately struck by the beauty of the surroundings.  It was clear that it is a much loved facility where ex miners, wives and widows can come and enjoy a well deserved break.’

Iain Gray said: ‘The home has been providing holidays for miners and their families for decades.  There are still large numbers of beneficiaries in East Lothian and other parts of the country who use the facility.  I hope East Lothian Council and Midlothian Council continue to make contributions to ensure the survival of this valuable facility.
